Case Study
Amphibious Defense Vehicle
Challenge
A leading defense contractor partnered with DSTI in the development of a next-generation amphibious vehicle, seeking a custom hydraulic rotary union engineered to meet demanding size, pressure drop, and performance requirements.
The primary challenge was an extremely constrained installation envelope. DSTI was tasked with designing an optimized solution that maximized flow capacity while minimizing overall footprint and preserving structural integrity. At the same time, the design needed to meet aggressive weight targets without compromising durability.
Beyond performance constraints, the rotary union was required to operate reliably in harsh marine environments, including full saltwater exposure and submersion. The system also had to comply with strict military standards, including MIL-STD-810G for shock and vibration, ensuring dependable operation under extreme conditions.
Solution
DSTI’s solution features a lightweight titanium construction, purpose-built to withstand the extreme demands of harsh operating environments. The design incorporates DSTI’s field proven sealing and bearing technologies, ensuring long-term reliability, consistent performance, and streamlined access to spare parts.
To achieve the required compact form factor, DSTI applied the same high-flow design principles used in our advanced weather and defense radar solutions. This approach minimized overall diameter and length while maintaining the required flow capacity, enabling peak system performance without compromising structural integrity.
Results
DSTI delivered a custom-engineered, three-passage rotary union designed for seamless system integration. Supplied as a fully assembled, turnkey solution, each unit underwent comprehensive testing prior to delivery, minimizing installation time, reducing integration risk, and accelerating program timelines.
Prototype units successfully completed field testing, validating performance in operational conditions and confirming the design’s reliability and readiness for full-scale production.
